The humble bean and pea

The feeling of excitement that comes with harvesting fresh produce from your garden is euphoric! The humble bean and pea variety are tiny powerhouses of nutrition are growing abundantly in the Garden of Goodness & Mercy and I couldn't be more excited! But sometimes, that excitement can be mixed with a touch of confusion, especially when it comes to fresh beans and peas.

I'll admit it, I had a bit of a bean-related blunder recently. I eagerly picked a basketful of what I thought were green beans, only to discover upon closer inspection that they were actually pods containing peas! Let's just say my dinner plans changed course quickly.

While my epic fail was certainly a lesson in proper vegetable identification, it also reminded me of the incredible benefits that both fresh beans and peas bring to the table (pun intended).

Nutritional powerhouses:

Beans and peas are nutritional superstars, packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber. They're a great source of plant-based protein, making them a perfect choice for vegetarians and vegans.

Here's a closer look at some of the key nutrients found in beans and peas:

Nutrient

Benefit

Protein

Essential for building and repairing tissues.

Fiber

Keeps you feeling full for longer and aids in digestion.

Vitamins and minerals

A good source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate, iron, and potassium.

Beyond the basics:

The beauty of beans and peas is their versatility. They can be enjoyed in countless ways, from fresh and crunchy in salads to cooked and incorporated into stir-fries, soups, stews, and pasta dishes.

Fresh vs. frozen:

While fresh beans and peas are undeniably delicious, frozen options offer a convenient and budget-friendly alternative. Frozen vegetables are flash-frozen at their peak freshness, locking in nutrients.

So, the next time you're at the farmer's market, grocery store or even growing your own, don't be afraid to embrace the world of beans and peas! With a little planning and creativity, you can incorporate these nutritional powerhouses into your diet and enjoy a variety of delicious and healthy meals.
